up the stairs to...

The oak staircase, which opens out of the sitting room, is probably original. We removed what was probably a coat rack (in too bad a condition to preserve, sadly) on the right, behind the door, after imagining cold workers hanging up their outer clothing in one of the few storage areas the cottage would have had.

The staircase is wide, but winding and quite steep. However, we were delighted to find an 18th century ‘orthopaedic handrail’ to replace the white sprayed one that was on the left, so there are strong supports both sides.
